Officers found a 35-year-old woman dead in the back seat of her vehicle after her ex-boyfriend led police on a chase across the San Francisco Bay Area, authorities said.

A friend contacted police at 12:42 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, after the woman told them she was possibly being followed by her ex-boyfriend at a Milpitas, California, parking lot, a police news release said.

The woman’s vehicle raced out of the parking lot at high speed as police arrived, officers said. An onlooker reported spotting a dead woman in the vehicle.

Police said they chased the vehicle, driven by the woman’s 42-year-old ex-boyfriend, from San Jose to Fremont, where it crashed.

The wreck injured the driver, who also had what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds, police said. He was hospitalized.

Officers said they found the woman in the back seat with fatal injuries from a weapon. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are not releasing the names of the man or woman until her family can be notified, the release said.

They ask that anyone with information contact detectives at 408-586-2400 or leave an anonymous tip at the crime tip hotline at 408-586-2500.
