score updates from day three of the second Test

We are only six days into this Ashes series and already the storylines feel oh so painfully familiar.

Having been in the field for five sessions, conceded 473 runs, dropped catches at key moments, taken wickets off no balls, and, for good measure, engaged in comedy misfields, there was a sense of inevitability about being 17 for two when a thunderstorm brought an early end to yesterday’s action.

Such was the dire day England endured up until the heavens opened and spoke that the sight of lighting was a welcome one for Dawid Malan and Joe Root – the two men at the crease, under the lights, when play was called off. The pair looked comfortable against the hosts’ world-class seam attack in Brisbane and will again be called upon to dig in and see off the newish ball (yes, that is the job of the openers, the departed Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed…).
