Naturally, the lion’s share of attention in the Oklahoma football world this week has centered on the Sooners’ ongoing head coaching search.
It makes sense, too. The Early Signing Period is rapidly approaching on Dec. 15 and Oklahoma needs its new head coach in place quickly to retain as much of the 2022 class as possible.
That goes for players already on campus as well. Namely, true freshman starting quarterback Caleb Williams. Who Oklahoma hires as its next head coach and offensive coordinator will go a long way in determining whether or not Williams stays or goes.
Former Oklahoma starting quarterback Spencer Rattler already made his announcement that he would be entering the transfer portal.
“Thank you for allowing me to be a student-athlete at this prestigious institution. Thank you to every teammate and coach these last three seasons. We won several games together and made memories that I will cherish forever. Special thanks to my family and friends for your support. Thank God for the game of football. It’s the ultimate team sport and brings people and communities together unlike anything else.
“At this time, I would like to announce that I have decided to enter the transfer portal to continue my academic and athletic career. Thank you again, Oklahoma. I will miss you,” Rattler wrote on Twitter in announcing his decision.
There’s been plenty of speculation about where Rattler might ultimately wind up. 247Sports’ Josh Newberg has an interesting prediction for the former five-star quarterback recruit.
Newberg put in his latest crystal ball prediction and it has Rattler ending up at UCLA with head coach Chip Kelly.
UCLA just put the finishing touches on an 8-4 regular season with a 42-14 win over Cal last week. Since taking over at UCLA in 2018, it’s the best season the Bruins have enjoyed under Kelly’s leadership.
This pairing would be particularly tasty for Oklahoma fans hoping that Rattler can exact some sort of revenge on Riley and USC.
UCLA thumped USC several weeks ago 62-33. Senior quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson passed for 349 yards and four touchdowns against the Trojans, while junior running back Zach Charbonnet carried 28 times for 167 rushing yards.
Rattler finished the 2021 season with 1,483 passing yards and 11 passing touchdowns against five interceptions. In 2020, Rattler passed for 3,031 yards and 28 touchdowns against seven interceptions.
Rattler helped Oklahoma rally back from a 1-2 start to the 2020 season. The Sooners won their final eight games of 2020, including a 27-21 Big 12 Championship game win over Iowa State.
Rattler passed for 272 yards with a touchdown against the Cyclones in what was the Sooners’ sixth straight Big 12 championship at the time.
