Five developments as Mariupol bombed into the ‘ashes of a dead land’



Good evening. In a haunting image, local officials in the besieged port city of Mariupol said that Russia is bombing it into the “ashes of a dead land”.

Mariupol, a city of 400,000 before the war, has been suffering an urgent humanitarian emergency since Russia invaded Ukraine nearly a month ago. 

Elsewhere, US president Joe Biden has warned that Russia is closer than ever to using biological and chemical weapons in Ukraine – as Vladimir Putin becomes increasingly desperate amid an apparent stalemate.

1. Bombs rain down on Mariupol 

Russia is pounding the besieged Ukrainian port of Mariupol into the “ashes of a dead land”, its local council said on Tuesday. 

The warning came as two more huge bombs fell on the city that has been sealed off for weeks.

Mariupol, a city of 400,000 before the war, has seen an urgent humanitarian emergency since Russia invaded Ukraine nearly a month ago. 

Hundreds of thousands of residents are believed to be trapped inside under near constant shelling, with no access to food, water, power or heat.

“There is nothing left there,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video address to the Italian parliament on Tuesday.
