Alabama receiver Jameson Williams ejected for targeting in 2021 Iron Bowl

No. 3 Alabama lost one of its biggest playmakers early in its biggest game of the season.

Wide receiver Jameson Williams was ejected with 9:02 remaining in the second quarter of Saturday’s Iron Bowl after being called for targeting Auburn’s Ja’Varrius Johnson in punt coverage.

Williams, who transferred from Ohio State to Alabama prior to this season, is a finalist for the Biletnikoff Trophy, which is awarded to the nation’s top receiver. He leads the SEC with 1,218 receiving yards and has 10 receiving touchdowns as one of Bryce Young’s go-to targets.

Prior to his ejection, Williams had two catches for 43 yards, although Alabama had serious trouble moving the ball overall. It punted on all but one drive in the first half.

On the drive immediately after Williams’ ejection, Auburn scored on a 15-yard pass from T.J. Finley to Kobe Hudson. After scoring the touchdown, Hudson paid “homage” to Williams by doing the Tide receiver’s signature touchdown celebration.

That was the only scoring in the first half. Auburn led 7-0 at halftime.

Because Williams’ penalty occurred in the first half of Saturday’s game, he will be eligible to play in the entire SEC championship game next week vs. No. 1 Georgia.
